Moving and don't know where to start? Read our quide for residential moves in Canada and USA

You've managed to find a mover and have booked yourself in for moving day - the question is, "Where do you start?". Staring at a house full of furniture waiting to be packed is a sure way to give yourself a headache, especially when you know you are working with a deadline. The first rule in making your moving experience a smooth one is to book your move well in advance. While this is not always possible, starting the packing process at least a month ahead of your scheduled moving date is recommended. If you are able to get away from work or your schedule allows you to dedicate full-time hours to the process, two weeks is usually sufficient. Once you've given yourself sufficient time and are ready to get things underway, the following will help you in getting ready for the big day.

One of the most important - and often forgotten - steps in moving to a new neighborhood or city is to change your address with anyone who relies on it to contact you. This includes your family doctor, bank(s), credit card companies, etc. and even your friends. Changing addresses with institutions is very important to ensure you continue to recieve crucial information like your bills (though it would be nice to forget these for a few months!).

The next step is to do a little "spring cleaning" by sorting out and discarding any items which you will not need in your new home. After you've removed any items that will be excluded from the move, it is a good idea to grab a notepad and make a list ranking your items in order of fragility. Some people choose to transport the most delicate/valuable items such as antique lamps or oil paintings themselves to make moving day a little smoother. While we are comfortable transporting any items in your home, we spend a lot of time on moving day packing and arranging the most fragile pieces, especially those not in boxes which cannot be stacked. By transporting as many of these items yourself you are ensuring moving day will proceed quicker and smoother, with the added piece of mind that your priceless heirlooms have already made it safely to the new home.

Remember also that the best way to prepare all of your boxes is by clearly labelling them according to their destination room in the new home and to stack them in a central location. These are the first items moved onto the truck on moving day so staging all boxes on the main floor in a location close to the front entrance creates the ideal access for our movers.

Once the packing process is nearing completion it is time to make a list of which utilities will need to be transferred to your new address and which need to be cancelled. Create a written list so as not to forget anything, and begin to contact your cable TV/internet providers, the electric/gas companies and any other service you are receiving at your current address that will require time/scheduling in order be set up/transferred to your new home.

Lastly, as you will still be living in your space until the big day arrives, it is wise to leave any parishable items and essentials as the last items to be packed. That means your kitchen and bathrooms should be the last rooms to get your attention as they contain items such as dishes, toilet paper, soap, etc. that you will be using in some cases right up until the point when the movers arrive.

At this point, if the task at hand is still somewhat daunting, it is also wise to consider having us do the packing for you. As professional packers we are able to pack the entire contents of your home within a much shorter timeframe than it would take you to do it yourself (usually one day or less). We also have access to unlimited packing materials and supplies including specialty boxes, bubble wrap, shrink wrap, etc. to ensure each item is packed for maximum protection. The final advantage to having your home professionally packed is that it usually saves a minimum of 1-2 hours on moving day. This is due to the fact that the boxes used will be uniform in shape and size, we will place them in the optimum location to be picked up on moving day, and the crew is already familiar with the weight and contents of each box, giving them confidence in which boxes can be stacked and to what height.

Overall, having your home prepared for moving well ahead of time is the best way to make your moving experience a pain-free one. There is nothing more stressful than packing and preparing your home right up until the last minute so remember the keys we've described here and you will be well onto your way to a successful move!
