Moving and don't know where to start? Read our quide for residential moves in Canada and USA

You have managed to find a mover.  The question remains: ’Where do you start?’  You have a house full of furniture and a heartburn problem because of all the stress.  When deciding on a mover it is always best to get a date at least 1 month in advance if you are employed.  If not it means you will have more time for packing boxes and preparing for the big day.  If you’re not employed then normally about 2 weeks will be a good move.

If you decide to have extra time for this whole event like a month then the following should be done to make you’re a life a little easier.  It is vital that you change addresses with people like your doctor, banks and even your friends.  It is also a good opportunity to forget the friends you don’t want anymore.  By now you should have at least told your friends of this important change in an effort to get some help. That’s if you have good friends they would normally respond with a smile and will try and assist you, well most of the time.  If you have friends like mine you will probably find a house warming party being planned before hand and the rest of the hard work after that.

Changing addresses with institutions is very important so as not to miss out on important information like your bills, not as if you will miss those anyways.  The best thing about moving is the fact that you can now actually spring clean for a reason.  Throw out the old sock and make sure you get a few new ones.  You must decide what stays and what goes, except if you have a husband or a wife you can always tie them up.  It is time to get a notepad and start writing down the seriousness of your clutter.  Go to each room and rate it according to the amount of items or very vulnerable items.  The most vulnerable items must be transported by your own means as to avoid a heart break or something else breaking.

Most transport companies will advice you on that.  If you have a good transport company then they will be more than willing to pack for you as well.  They will normally decide on what goes where and what a better option is.  It is always a good option to get a head start with packing as you will have to pay the transport company by hours; it obviously depends on who you get for the job.  The longer they take the more expensive it gets.  If you carry a few pennies around and would rather spend it on a loaf of bread and milk, do your own preparation beforehand and save money.

If you want your luxury to be readily available at your planned destination it is also now time to plan for that.  Things like gas, cable television and telephones should be arranged so as you will not have a ‘Survivor’ episode at your planned destination.  Can you remember how to make fire without matches?

When you have done the proper planning make things a bit easier for the moving company by having a central storage point where you will keep your boxes.  When you pack start from a easy room like a guest room with less items and make this room your central storage point.  You don’t want boxes all over the house otherwise you will have a boot camp with an obstacle course in it and I am sure you don’t want to do leopard crawling and up sailing just to make a cup of coffee.

You still want to live in your house so having the necessary items available is a good thing.  Also make sure that you have split the items that need your soft care and touch away from what needs to be moved by the movers.  It is best to make sure that all this is done before the transport company arrives so your job is focused on supervising the move. This is to make sure that nothing happens to your furniture and to feel a bit more in control.
