Your moving guide

Here are a few guidelines to follow to ensure a smooth transition on moving day.

1. Before you begin to do any packing or preparation, call us to confirm your moving date and time.

2. Use your move as an opportunity to do some "Spring cleaning". This is a great time to go through your home and search for items that have gone un-used or under-used for a long time. If you find you have a lot of clutter in your home plan a garage sale; alternatively you can gather items you do not wish to take to your new home and donate them to charity. Not only will you have a clutter-free space to start off with in your new home, but you will reduce the workload on moving day!

3. Decide how you would like to pack all of your belongings. There are several options depending on whether or not you choose to complete the packing process on your own or whether you would like some help. Viktoria Professional Movers are able to provide full or partial packing solutions, from simple purchase and delivery of your packing materials to a full-service packing experience where we handle all of the details. Either way, plan to begin packing well ahead of time so you are ready to go on moving day.

4. Begin the packing process with breakable/fragile items first, then store them in a safe place where they are out of the way during the remainder of the process. Remember to label these items clearly for the movers.

5. Label all of your boxes! Once the packing process has begun, ensure all boxes are clearly labelled based on their destination in your new home. This will ensure our movers place each box in the correct location and save you time in the unpacking process.

6. Make arrangements for your pets on moving day. Pets are wonderful but they can sometimes get in the way on moving day so it is a good idea to think about where they will stay during the moving process. Most moves are full-day events and it is sometimes a good idea to ask friends or family to take care of your pets rather than locking them up in a room or cage during the moving process. This will also save you stress on moving day by taking one more worry off of your mind.

7. Make sure you have stored all important documents in a safe place, and if possible transport these items with you on moving day. The unpacking process can be quite a daunting task and is usually completed over several days if not weeks. If you have documents that you will need access to in case of emergency or otherwise it is best to exclude them from the move and have them ready at hand when you arrive in your new home to avoid searching through boxes to locate them.

8. Talk to your Real Estate Agent and make sure you have all paperwork completed. Sometimes minor details or omissions can cause long delays or completely hold up the process of transferring ownership of your new home. Please check with your agent to make sure your lawyer has everything necessary to complete the closing process in a smooth manor.

9. If you have young children and are moving a long distance remember to register them with their new school district well in advance so they can immediately transition to their new school.

10. Change your address with banks, the post office and any important institutions that rely on an your address to contact you.

11. Make sure you have enabled all utilities at your new home, including your phone, gas/hydro, cable TV, and internet.

12. Drain any gasoline/fuel out of lawnmowers/edge cutters and any power tools before moving day. Please remember that we are not able to transport any chemicals in our moving trucks so arrange to have propane tanks and gasoline cannisters transported in your own vehicle or via another alternative.

13. Cancel all subscriptions including newspapers/magazines, or change your mailing address to your new home.

14. If are moving to a new area and have memberships at a local gym or community centre remember to clean out your lockers of any belongings you are holding there.

15. Make sure you have insurance for any items of extraordinary value. If you have a piano, expensive artwork, or any item of extraordinary value we recommend purchasing full-value insurance coverage for these items. Please inquire for details.

16. When packing remember to exclude items that will be used on moving day such as toothbrushes, toilet paper, hand soap, etc.

17. Remember to start the unpacking process by assembling and arranging your bedroom first. Moving can be a tiring experience and you will likely need your bed soon enough!
